Mommy Simplicity Finding Calm in the Chaos eBook Sandy Kreps

Mommy Simplicity is a great resource. Not only was each chapter filled with great ideas to make mothering and running a household easier, but you could feel her passion behind each sentence you read. This book would be a great baby shower gift, helping those who are on the verge of being parents to have some valuable tools. But even those of us who are done mothering, and are now grandmas, what great tips she offers us I found so many helpful tips tucked within the pages. It's a book I'll read more than once because of she packed inside and the way she made all the tips easy to understand. It was obvious she knows the challenges of being a mommy.

One thing important to me when reading a book, is how relevant is the book? Well this one will have something for any mom. Do you struggle with coming up with meals? How about grocery shopping? Do you wish you had some tips for making an arduous task a little less difficult? You'll find all of that and more within the pages.

One of my favorite sections is the one on decluttering. It's something I've spent a lot of time trying to do. Once again I am finding great suggestions for that difficult task.

There are tips for working moms, how to ask for help when you need it. It is truly an encyclopedia of great ideas. I whole-heatedly recommend this book to anyone who would like to make the job of mothering a little easier.

Note: I was offered a copy in exchange for an honest review.

Mommy Simplicity Finding Calm in the Chaos eBook Sandy Kreps Reviews

What's a single, childless gal like me doing reading a book with a title like "Mommy Simplicity"?

Well, my attention was piqued by that second word. I had a suspicion there were going to be some useful organizational tips that could be applied to non-parents in various stages of life as well...and I was right.

Sandy begins with a look at look at the goals of "the simplicity movement," which, she explains, isn't about "getting rid of your television, canning all your own food, and homeschooling your kids" (though you're quite welcome to do so if that's where your heart lies). Whew! Good news for me. Rather, the main goal is to get rid of all the unnecessary "stuff" (and who among us doesn't have a lot of it?) in favor of focusing your time and attention on "what makes you feel happiest and fulfilled instead of what the media says you should have or be." In addition, there is the added goal of a greener and more sustainable lifestyle that facilitates better allocation of resources to those in need. Yep, those goals make for better humans as well as better humans. My interest, piqued, was now fairly caught.

And I was not disappointed. In this thoughtfully considered, highly practical yet down to earth and simple to follow guide, Sandy addresses not just how get your kids on board when it comes to household organization, but the need for fun, patience and consistency, gratitude, prayer, and, of course, prioritization. As a married mother of two boys who also juggles a writing, editing and graphic design career, she not only speaks from the trenches, but enlists the tried and tested perspective of other moms. From my own perspective as a childless single from a family of collectors, who is also fond of to-do lists and who also juggles multiple deadlines and responsibilities at times, I was especially interested in the concept of budgeting time as one would money and tips on decluttering (including room-by-room cleaning, with recipes for chemical-free, DIY cleaning solutions). There's even a section on how busy moms (or busy anybodies in need of a little self-care!) can pamper themselves.

The benefits of simplicity are varied and potentially life changing in multiple areas, including the teaching of valuable life skills to the next generation. Do yourself a big favor and get a copy of this book to find out how. Then get one for your busy friends. They're bound to thank you for it.
First off, I should disclose that I received a free copy of the book and was asked to consider reviewing it. That said, if I had disliked the book, I would have simply declined to review it, rather than give a glowing review to a book I did not enjoy. This book is relevant to all sorts of mothers. I appreciated that as there is often an assumption in books about simplifying with children that the children come in groups of three, one of whom is in diapers and the remaining children being toddlers. This book makes just as much sense for single mothers, mothers of almost grown children, and mothers of large or small families as it does for the oft-assumed traditional family with very young children. The author also does a nice job of balancing the need to simplify one's physical space with other aspects of simplicity, such as time and money management.
The author gives broad ideas about simplifying in each category that she discusses and then does an excellent job of making those broad ideas more specific without getting so narrow that suggestions are only applicable under certain circumstances. She fleshes out the suggestions with specific techniques but is not overly preachy about following her techniques as the only way to simplify. During the part of the book where she discusses decluttering specific rooms, she strikes this balance nicely as well - suggestions are concrete but there are not so specific that they will only work in one type of house with one type of clutter. As an aside, I also liked that she includes easy recipes for the cleaners that she uses - this was not an integral part of the book but was a nice lagniappe to find in there!
I did have a few problems with the book, however. I found the Mommy Testimonies quite unhelpful. They were too shallow to add much of anything to the book. One the up side, there were not very many of these included. The quotes from other mothers suffered the same way. They tended to be throwaway comments, rather than useful insights. It felt like someone advised the author to "incorporate case studies and quotes" so she did, but not in a helpful way. The attributed quotes from various other authors were a different story. These tended to illuminate the point that the author made in the previous section nicely and, because they were set off from the rest of the text, provided nice pauses in the book. My other problem is that the author assumes that we all want to be the fun and funny mom that tends to be glorified in the media. I am neither and probably never will be, so holding this up as an ideal just makes me feel inadequate. It would have been more helpful if the sections about ways to incorporate attributes into one's mothering such as being fun and mothering with grace were presented as possibilities, rather than ideals.
Overall, I would recommend this as a worthwhile read for all types of mothers. While the ideas are not earth shattering, they are presented in a clear organized manner and the level of detail makes change manageable without being overly prescriptive.
