Valerie Pepe’s autobiography is an inspirational story of a woman’s successful struggle to overcome a crippling physical deformity and live a normal life. Born with joint contractures and abnormal fibrosis of the muscle tissue in her lower body, a rare birth defect known as Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita (AMC), Valerie has fought a never-ending battle against those who would isolate her and other deformed individuals. As a child growing up in the New York City borough of Staten Island, Valerie was encouraged by her parents and older brothers to play street games with the neighborhood kids despite her dependence on crutches. After entering school, however, she was segregated into classes for disabled children—an experience which left her with the life-long determination to never again allow herself to be isolated from so-called normal people. In her strong, down-to-earth, no-nonsense voice, Valerie tells her story of a disabled person rising to the challenges of college, career, sexual relationships and marriage.

After reading this book it made me realize more about why “God gives you only as much you can handle” is so very true. Working in the same agency (NYCHA) as Valerie and not knowing much about what she went through gives me a broader picture of her life and how she overcame her struggles. I am proud to know that she has more of an identity. Bravo to her.Product details

This is a wonderful story of someone I have known for years. She reminded me of the similar and different experiences people with disabilities have.
Great book! Has a great story about Valerie's life and the things she's gone through. She spent a lot of time writing about it, and it has a wonderful outcome. Most definitely would recommend reading. As a fellow AMCer like Val, I know the things she went through. She talks about her life growing up, her career, love life, and Arthrogryposis. A lot of us go through these things in life. Very well-written book. Valerie, you are wonderful! So happy for your success! )
This was a story of pure courage. Having a crippling disease from birth, the author details her struggles to achieve mobility and integration with a sometimes hostile environment. It is also a story of love and family.
Great book. Enlightening as well as entertaining. If you want to know how to relate with someone with a disability or deformity. this is a good book to read. I have a disability/deformity myself yet I learned some things, as well as being able to relate to the struggles faced.
I found a few typographical errors that managed to sneak past spell checking but not an issue that would hinder the enjoyment of this book.
A well written book by the author, Valerie Pepe depicting her life living with a rare dibilitating disease AMC (Arfhrogryposis Multiplex Congenita) since birth. This book will inspire people with disabilities to follow in Valerie's footsteps in overcoming them and to live a normal and successful life.
